With the release of the AO for SMEX Mission Set #3, NASA converted the
SMEX Program to a PI-Mode managed mission approach. Consequently, in
the Spring of 1999, the GSFC in-house SMEX Project was closed. The
Project was reassigned to implement the Triana mission (now defunct)
and carried with them the continued development of the SMEX-Lite
satellite bus. Current SMEX missions are now managed through the GSFC
Explorers Project
