With the release of the AO for SMEX Mission Set #3, NASA converted the SMEX Program to a PI-Mode managed mission approach. Consequently, in the Spring of 1999, the GSFC in-house SMEX Project was closed. The Project was reassigned to implement the Triana mission (now defunct) and carried with them the continued development of the SMEX-Lite satellite bus. Current SMEX missions are now managed through the GSFC Explorers Project ( http://explorers.gsfc.nasa.gov/).

Welcome to the Small Explorer's Web Site

NASA's Small Explorer (SMEX) Program provides frequent flight opportunities for highly focused and relatively inexpensive space science missions. SMEX spacecraft are 180 to 250 kg with orbit-average power consumption of 50 to 200 watts. Each mission is expected to cost approximately $35 million for design, development, and operations through the first 30 days in orbit.

Mission definition, development, and launch of Small Explorers are managed by the Small Explorer Project Office, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, DC.

Small Explorer Mission Set 3 was selected in October 1997.
